Divorce Recovery: Enjoying Summer
There’s a financial story after divorce that doesn’t get talked about enough.
June 30, 2026

There’s a financial story after divorce that doesn’t get talked about enough.

Not the legal fees. Not the division of assets. Those topics usually get plenty of attention.

It’s the quieter moments that can feel surprisingly complicated; like summer.

Patios, camps, concerts, weekends away, and long-awaited time outdoors can all bring joy. But after divorce, they can also bring uncertainty: What can I afford now?

That uncertainty can be paralyzing. It can also create guilt when friends and family want to include you, but you are still learning what your new financial life looks like.

Done thoughtfully, however, summer can become a meaningful part of divorce recovery — socially, personally, and financially.

  • Social connection matters. After months of cold weather, summer offers a natural opportunity to reconnect. Time with others can help ease the isolation that often follows separation or divorce.  An 85 year study at Harvard found that social relationships are ether predictors of life satisfaction than money, status and even genetics.
  • Nature can help quiet the mind. Parks, beaches, trails, and neighbourhood walks can be restorative and low-cost. Even a simple walk outside can create space from repetitive, stressful thoughts (Bratman et al, 2015).  If you are lucky enough to have a dog then you probably have a very willing companion.
  • A slower pace can make room for exploring your identity. Longer days and fewer school-year demands may open space to revisit the interests, routines, and relationships that help you feel like yourself again.

Of course, divorce has a financial impact in every season. Whether you pay or receive support, building a sustainable and livable budget is essential. That budget may look different from the one you were used to; but different does not have to mean joyless.

A thoughtful financial planner can help you understand what is reasonable for discretionary spending while still protecting your stability and long-term wealth-building.

At MVP Wealth, our hope for anyone navigating life after divorce is this: give yourself permission to enjoy the season within a plan that supports your future.
